Happy Bargain Friday! A homey farmhouse with sweeping vistas on 16+ acres in Maumtrasna, County Mayo, Ireland!

This property feels magical! With gorgeous views, a huge amount of land suitable for grazing, lough (lake) frontage, and a small cottage plus several additional farm buildings, there is so much to work with. The interior is snug but cozy and cheerful.

This property is adjacent to a pricier property – Red Island House, being sold separately for €275,000 – a three bed/two bath home on 5 acres. Nearby are two further properties – a cottage for €285,000 on 14.5 acres and a larger home on 19 acres for €590,000. These properties can be purchased together or separately, but all have stunning terrain and beautiful views to offer.

I investigated why these gorgeous properties may be for sale and found that the beautiful Lough Mask actually has a long history of tragic drownings which cast an eerie feeling over the stunning scenery. If anyone is a true crime obsessive I also found the intriguing 19th Century mystery of the Maamtrasna murders, with lots of twists and turns. I don’t know if these dark events explain the reason for the sale but it lends an interesting backdrop to the scene.

From the listing on Savills:

LOT 4: Martin Tom’s Cottage (About 16.6 acres / 6.7 hectares, 384m lough frontage)

Neighbouring Red Island House is Martin Tom’s Cottage, which includes a quaint detached cottage, farm buildings and about 16.6 acres of grazing land. The cottage has a stone exterior beneath a corrugated roof.

To the side of the property is a set of farm buildings including a connecting livestock, tractor and hay shed as well as livestock handling facilities and a store.

The Derrypark & Glenbeg Portfolio is located on the banks of Lough Mask on the fringe of the Mayo/Galway county boundary. The portfolio of properties is set amongst unspoilt rural countryside, commanding magnificent views over Lough Mask and onto the Partry Mountains. County Mayo is located on Ireland’s west coast and is often described as one of the country’s hidden treasures.
