Scicli, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, is located in the Val di Noto in southeastern Sicily. Its Baroque charm has inspired numerous artists and intellectuals, including famed Italian novelist Elio Vittorini, who declared it as the most beautiful city in the world.
The earthquake of 1693 devastated southeastern part of the island, including Scicli. The reconstruction that followed is known as Sicilian baroque, with grand palazzos and ornate churches, which decorate Scicli’s skyline.
Recently, Scicli has also been in the spotlight as the backdrop for the Italian hit TV series Inspector Montalbano.
